Herbie History

License plate

Herbie has an iconic license plate that everyone recognizes: OFP857, a black California plate with yellow lettering.
OFP857 stands for Our First Production, 8-57. The Love Bug’s producer, Robert Stevenson, worked with Walt Disney beginning in August 1957, and this was his first production.
This license plate was used until Herbie Fully Loaded in 2005.

Number 53

Rumor has it that “The Love Bug’s” producer, Bill Walsh, chose “53” because it was the uniform number of Don Drysdale, a well-known baseball player at the time.
In 1956, Don Drysdale made the jump to the majors, both starting and pitching out of the bullpen for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Paint color

The paint color is the standard factory color Perlweiss (Pearl White), VW code L87.
It’s an off white.

Car model
