6th Ionian VolksFest Kefalonia
Since our visit to Kefalonia in 2019, we had the idea to drive our Beetle to a future Ionian VolksFest. It was Gert van Dijk who opted to go to the 6th Ionian VolksFest in 2020. Soon after discussing the first ideas Frans, Andrew and Yvonne joined the group. A logo was created for the “Kefalonia Roadtrip 2020”. In November 2019 the route was planned and we booked all the hotels and ferries for our journey.
No all we had to do was
wait until august until COVID-19 ruined all of our plans… In June of 2020 we decided to cancel the road trip, the risk of getting in some sort of lockdown in one of the eight countries we had to cross was the main reason. Fortunately, most of the hotels gave us a refund and the ferry company gave us a voucher for 2021. But wait, is this it? The end of our summer trip?
Soon after canceling the road trip Patty and I decided to book plane tickets to Athens. Soon thereafter we booked a rental car and ferry tickets to Kefalonia. The trip is back on!
Just one week before our flight, another set back. We needed a negative COVID-test to enter Greece. This meant we only had a few days to arrange the tests and wait for the test results. To be on the safe side we decided to rebook to a later flight from Amsterdam to Athens. Fortunately, the test results came in negative and we were on our way.
We arrived in Athens at 1 A.M. and after picking up our rental car we drove straight to the ferry. After we arrived in the port of Poros, Kefalonia we decided to drive to Antisamos beach to get some sun and sleep, we were dead tired from the journey. In the afternoon we met our friends Charis and Eleni who invited us to join the other participants for diner in a local restaurant. Great Greek food! We loved it!
6th Ionian VolksFest day one:
The official start of the VolksFest was in Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. Here all participants had to register and received their goodie bag. After a few hours, we headed to Sarris Winery the local wines. A great location with a nice view! After the wine tasting, we headed to the nearby Avithos Beach, for some swimming and again, great Greek food!
We ended the first day in the town center of Argostoli where the cars were showed to the public.
6th Ionian VolksFest day two:
We’ve met at a square in Argostoli for the start of the island tour to Sami, Agia Effimia, and Agia Kiriaki Beach. We wanted to get some drone footage of the cars crossing an old Bailey bridge, just outside Argostoli, so we drove ahead to set up the cameras and the drone. What an awesome location! Enjoy the video:
The day ended at Mouikis Sun Village for the club party and lottery. Thanks to VW Aircooled Club Kefalonia for the gifts!
6th Ionian VolksFest day three:
The last day of the meeting was just a relaxed day near Argostoli. In the morning we gathered at the Saint Theodore Lighthouse for a photoshoot. After a few hours of photographing and filming we moved to the town hall in Argostoli to show the cars to the public and get some refreshments.
The VolksFest ended at Ammos Beach with a beautiful sunset.
We would like to thank everyone for a great weekend! Next year we will try to make the Kefalonia Roadtrip happen and join you for the 7th Ionian VolksFest!
The 7th Ionian VolksFest will take place on 20-22 August 2021. Stay tuned for more information!
